Drive to Symonds Yat West

We are half-way between Birmingham and Cardiff, where the Welsh border runs between Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth. Find us at National Grid Reference SO 553174 on Map 14 of the Ordnance Survey's Outdoor Leisure Series.

Recommended direct route

This simple route to The AMAZING HEDGE PUZZLE avoids all road restrictions and the steep, winding, narrow roads with passing-places and cul-de-sacs of other parts of the Symonds Yat area:

  • Take the A40 Trunk Road between ROSS-ON-WYE and MONMOUTH
  • Turn off the A40 at WHITCHURCH and head south on the B4164 towards SYMONDS YAT WEST
  • At the roundabout take the SYMONDS YAT WEST exit
  • Follow the B4164 for 100 metres to find The AMAZING HEDGE PUZZLE on your left, opposite the Old Court Hotel.
  • Our Car Park is FREE OF CHARGE FOR CUSTOMERS - the only free car park in the Symonds Yat area. If it is full, turn left out of our exit to find another car park 100 metres further on. Pay for parking and bring your parking ticket to our ticket office - we will refund the money when you buy tickets for The AMAZING HEDGE PUZZLE.

Road restrictions in the Symonds Yat area

The B4164 gives excellent access as far as The AMAZING HEDGE PUZZLE from the A40 Trunk Road.

Spectacular scenery makes driving between the three settlements of Symonds Yat West, Symonds Yat East and Yat Rock challenging. If in doubt, cross the River Wye using the B4229 at Kerne Bridge (grid reference SO 591192) or via the A466 bridge at Monmouth (grid reference SO 522127) and follow our recommended direct route to The AMAZING HEDGE PUZZLE.

Yat Rock and Symonds Yat East - B4432

Some maps seem to show a road-bridge between Symonds Yat East and Symonds Yat West. In fact, the villages are separated by the River Wye, the only direct access being by pedestrian ferry . Below Yat Rock, the incline is 20%. The road is narrow with passing-places and no footway. Some drivers fail to make the hairpin-turn into the Symonds Yat East cul-de-sac, and need Mountain Rescue!

Buses and coaches are prohibited between Yat Rock and the turning bay at grid reference SO 570168, and on the unclassified cul-de-sac which is the only route to Symonds Yat East. There is a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes between Yat Rock (Grid reference SO 574160) and Huntsham Bridge (Grid reference SO 578181) except for access.

Symonds Yat West - B4164

The cul-de-sac narrows once you pass The AMAZING HEDGE PUZZLE. Beyond grid reference SO 579160 all vehicles are prohibited except for access. The roads loops back on itself around a hairpin-bend, but gets narrower than many cars! Side-roads in the area are all marked "unsuitable for vehicles".

Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are prohibited beyond the Paddocks Hotel (grid reference SO 566166).
