FIRST AID AND EMERGENCY SERVICES

INFORMATION FOR STATUTORY RISK ASSESSMENT

BASIC ADVICE

Supervise your children

Never leave children under 14 in the Jubilee Maze enclosure without an adult supervisor - The AMAZING HEDGE PUZZLE staff cannot take on the legal duty of a parent or guardian to supervise children. We do not expect you to accompany them (that would spoil the fun), but we do expect you to be in the enclosure for them just in case they need you, to see them across roads and car parks, and to keep an eye on them near water and on the viewing platform.

Always think of others

Never rush blindly around corners, you may hurt someone much smaller than you; and do not squirt water-pistols at non-combatants.

Stay on the paths

Fences are there to protect the hedges - they will not bear your weight - and a fall could result in serious injury; never get in the hedges - you will cause serious damage to the maze - and electrical equipment can really hurt you if damaged.

Never bring pets into the Jubilee Maze enclosure

Animals can be unpredictable when surprised by excited children, and many children find dogs intimidating. If you have no alternative other than to bring a pet with you, please ensure that it is not left in an unventilated vehicle - hot cars can kill. Please clean up after animals.

FIRST AID AND EMERGENCY SERVICES

Group Leaders are responsible for providing First Aid for members of their group using the group's own First Aid Kit. First Aid assistance and telephone access are available through any member of site staff. Statutory First Aid Kits are located in each shop and in the Maze enclosure. For Fire, Police, Ambulance or River, Cave and Cliff Rescue dial 999 and follow the instructions given by the operator. Minor Injuries Unit: Ross Community Hospital, 01989 562100 (6.3 miles and 18 minutes drive). Casualty and Maternity Units: Hereford County Hospital, 01432 355444 (17.4 miles away and 38 minutes drive). Injuries needing treatment beyond on-site First Aid must be recorded in the Accident Book.

INFORMATION FOR STATUTORY RISK ASSESSMENT

The AMAZING HEDGE PUZZLE is an enclosed area designed as a safe place for people to play, but there are potential hazards to visitors on the property. In a survey of around one million consecutive visits to the Maze medical treatment was needed for: A sprained wrist; A fractured arm; Four cuts; Heat exhaustion; An infected wound; A coma or fit; A suspected back injury; A psychotic episode of an escorted patient. Predisposition and negligent or wilful behaviour by the victim including climbing, fighting, and wearing inappropriate clothing or footwear were a contributory factor in most of these incidents. Organised activity significantly reduces that risk. The coma patient was due to take over as sole Group Leader and driver in charge of a party, so Groups are advised to plan for incapacity of key personnel. Injuries not requiring medical treatment were mostly grazes. Sunburn and stings also occurred.

The table below specifies critical hazards and precautions which visitors should normally take to avoid injury.

HAZARD LOCATION POTENTIAL RISK PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID INJURY
