Play Hide 'n' Seek & TigMazes are traditionally places to play games in: The Roman poet Virgil moaned that the children of Ancient Romans played in mazes; in Holland during the renaissance, people played "tikkerdje" in mazes and even skirmished with swords; one maze in a French cathedral had to be removed to stop children playing on it during Mass; Danish children played chase in mazes a hundred years ago; and the young bloods of Saffron Walden competed in maze games for nothing less than gallons of beer! In Sweden, children made mazes in the snow, and tousled in them on skis. In Egypt, the Mamluks rode around them on horseback in formation. In India, people rode around them in chariots pulled by elephants. The ancient Romans rode around them in full armour, with three squadrons of riders charging towards each other and then veering away at the last minute - some game! The ancient Greeks danced around mazes to the music of the lyre, but the strangest of all were the Etruscans: They rode around mazes on horseback, brandishing shields and spears, with no clothes - but with monkeys! The Jubilee Maze is also a great place to play. Hide 'n' Seek (or Peep-Ho if you are younger) is huge fun, or you can play Sardines, Tig, Stick-in-the-Mud, Chain Tag, or just race against the clock. Skirmishing with water-pistols is fun in hot weather - but no-one is allowed to squirt non-combatants! Booked Groups of 15 or more have a choice of activities including games at The AMAZING HEDGE PUZZLE. Of course, with children having so much fun, it's reassuring to know that we have a Play Safe Policy based on over twenty years of experience in managing the welfare of children visiting our maze.
